Ten Tips for staying Healthy when Traveling

Traveling is medicine for the soul! Travel with no regrets and live with no excuses! I have had the travel bug for years and have so much more to see and experience! There is no price for the memorable experiences like seeing the world, cultural diversity, amazing scenery, food variety and adventures you pursue!

There is no snooze button to hit before work, exercise comes from snorkelling over the reefs instead of the gym and appreciating the food that you don’t have to cook yourself. However, it is very difficult to enjoy the above if you are not feeling well. Here are some of my favourite tips so you can indulge and have a great time no matter where you are jetsettting off to:

1. Digital Detox

A quick and easy way to give your mind and soul a little boost is to detox from the digital world. Anyone who has travelled in less developed countries will testify that some of the happiest people in the world are those with a lot fewer possessions than us lucky travellers. Stepping back from the 0’s and 1’s is often key to a mental makeover while travelling.

 2. Sleep

It’s impossible to underestimate how important it is to get enough sleep while travelling. Pick a hostel, hotel or apartment that has a comfy bed and some peace and quiet so you can rest for your next day adventure.

3. Gut Health

Recently on our family trip to Hawaii, we all experienced a bad stomach bug which caused us to vomit on the plan ride over and gave us all severe diarrhoea. This is a travel nightmare! Staying on top of your gut health will help you tolerate the foreign food and drink a lot easier and strengthen your immune system. Luckily, I have my Immunity Fuel with me so I dosed up on this (as it contains saccharomyces which are destroyed when you get a stomach bug) and I was feeling back to normal within 24 hours.

4. Indulge with the food but nourish your body as well!

Make sure you try all the different cultural food and indulge and treat yourself! You are on holiday so make the most of it. Try to balance this out (when you can) with nutrient dense food to nourish your body to balance out your blood sugar levels and support your metabolism.

5. Stay Hydrated

You’ve just got to stay hydrated. It sounds simple but it’s scary how quickly health on the road can take a turn for the worse when it’s all sun and sweat and no aqua! Carry a reusable bottle with you. Just make sure you get that H2O!

6. Walk as much as you can

Try your best to walk as much as you can. It may sound like a no brainer but you’d be surprised how easy it is to keep your metabolism moving and your mind in a state of Zen just by walking. City breaks make it pretty easy to get your stroll on, but it’s also definitely doable in more remote locations. Do your research, take your time, and walk. Go for some nature hikes and make the most of moving as much as you can!

7. Don’t forget your fibre

Keep feeding your gut microbiome with lots of fibre everyday (when you can) by ensuring you are getting at least 5 handfuls of vegetables in. Aim for non-starchy vegetables. Add in sources of wholegrains like oats, quinoa, millet, wholegrain breads, etc. Snack on pieces of fruit.

8. Kill those germs

It can be easy to take sanitation for granted in some parts of the world, but no matter where you are, you’ll stay so much healthier by keeping clean. Wash those hands! Wash your clothes! Avoid dodgy food situations. Take hand sanitiser with you. Protect yourself from pesky and preventable bugs that are hell bent on impeding your trip.

9. Open your mind and heart

Another soul healing thing that makes travel so incredible is its ability to open our minds and hearts. Learning about other cultures and experiencing them first hand destroys prejudices and brings peace to the mind. Part of being healthy means developing an ever deepening healthy view of the world.

10. Fresh air is the best

Cleanse your heart, your skin, your lungs, and your emotions with as much fresh air as you can. Experience the beauty of the natural world no matter where you are visiting

This is what my Grandmother always told me ” Life is a one way journey, there is no turning back” so remember to live your life to the fullest! Enjoy x
