One of the major nutrients in bone broth is Glutamine. Glutamine is an amino acid that has been well researched and has shown to be beneficial in healing and repair within the body. Glutamine is great for your gut, connective tissue, bones, tendons & ligaments and muscle repair/ growth. The body seems to utilise glutamine in higher concentrations when in stress states. Glycine is another nutrient found in high amounts in bone broth via the gelatin released from the bones. It is associated with improved sleep quality and improvements to mental health as well as memory and learning. Lastly, the gelatin found in the bone broth is so many health benefits from bone health, joint pain, digestive aid, sleep improvement, mood enhancer and skin toner!
Ingredients (makes 3.5 litres)
1-2kgs beef bones
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
3 bay leaves
1 onion, chopped into chunks
2 carrots, chopped
2 cloves garlic, diced
2 sprigs of thyme
1.5-2 litres of water salt/ pepper
Place everything into a slow cooker and fill water up to the 2 litre mark. Cook on low for 8-10 hours.
Scoop the bones, meat, carrots, onions, etc into a bowl and drain the liquid through a sieve into a large jug.
Pour into sealed glass jars and store in fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for future use. Season to your taste.
Place all the bones, meat, vegetables, etc back into the slow cooker and refill with more water up to the 1.5 litre mark. Leave on low for another 8 hours and repeat the same process as above.
